Overview

This guide is designed for individuals who have a basic familiarity with smartphones and navigation apps. Throughout this series we will outline steps to help you stabilise your finances, access available benefits and build additional income streams.

Gather essential documents

Before starting, ensure you have a copy of your birth certificate and Social Security card. Having these documents on hand makes it easier to apply for assistance programmes and open accounts. If you are missing any documents, contact your local vital records office and the Social Security Administration for replacements.

Apply for public assistance

Visit your local Human Resources Administration or Department of Social Services to explore eligibility for programmes such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/food stamps) and Temporary Assistance. Some jurisdictions offer expedited benefits for households with little or no income â€” ask about emergency food stamps to receive assistance quickly.

Obtain and activate your EBT card

Once approved, you will receive an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card to access food and cash benefits. Follow the instructions provided to set a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Keep your PIN secure, as you will need it every time you use the card.

Ensure you have a working phone

Reliable phone access is critical for managing benefits, job searches and communications. If you do not own a smartphone, you may qualify for a free device through the federal Lifeline programme, such as those offered by Assurance Wireless. Alternatively, local social‑service offices often host phone providers that can assist you in person.
